Author of Made in British Columbia A Q&A with Laurie Carter You’ve written many works during your illustrious academic career; why this book now?  I had written the cultural history of Canada over 20 years ago; now it was time to focus on British Columbia. How did you select the eight people to profile? There were so many I could have chosen: writers like Earle Birney and Roderick Haig Brown. I chose eight people whose reputations will last and who made an impact on their contemporaries. They were also very different people: some came to prominence, like Martin Grainger,...

I realized quickly that the highest ROI came from what we were doing with LinkedIn...

A Q& A with Laurie Carter What is Rain Dance about? The untidy end of a bad marriage. It opens with Ellen burying Stan, at night, in the rain. Alongside Government Street. What inspired you to write this book? The city was replacing the storm sewer system, and I figured it was a great opportunity to dispose of a body. Rain Dance was an entry for Okanagan College’s short story contest, but those characters weren’t satisfied; now it’s a novel. Who are your intended readers? People who enjoy who-dun-its with a little dark humour; readers who don’t have time to commit to longer novels. How much research...

Okanagan environmentalist lends her voice to Global Chorus

Released last fall, the environmental daily mediation book Global Chorus: 365 Voices on the Future of the Planet has an Okanagan connection. Among the leading environmentalists contributing to the book is Okanagan Basin Water Board executive director Anna Warwick Sears.  “The way I see it,” says Anna, “the future of humanity is about water.” The illustrated collection provides meditations around some very large and increasingly crucial themes: “Do you think that humanity can find a way past the current global environmental and social crises? Will we be able to create the conditions necessary for our own survival as well as that of other species on...
