Okanagan Life magazine is marking its 25th year milestone in publishing with cultural celebrations across the Okanagan Valley, including one in Summerland.
“Our anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate some of the amazing spots we have in the Okanagan – and what better place than a ride on the historic Kettle Valley Steam Railway,” says publisher John Paul Byrne. “Throughout the years, our magazine has shared the stories of the Okanagan Valley and now we’re celebrating with communities with great music, art and adventure.”
The Summerland celebration is set for Sunday, October 13 with a special ride on the Historic Kettle Valley Steam Railway at 1:30 pm.
The city and regional magazine, which publishes ten times a year, first came off the press in September 1988. On that cover was sculptor, Robert Dow Reid, creator of the iconic Spirit of the Sails, installed in downtown Kelowna in 1978.
Most known for people profiles, Okanagan Life has featured community activists and entertainers, including musician Felix Possak, who plays banjo on the railway excursions. His private collection of stringed folk instruments was part of a cover feature in the July/August 2011 issue of Okanagan Life magazine. (see Retro Music)
Possak will be joined by Byrne who is also a singer/songwriter, as they entertain passengers on the special anniversary train ride.
With a circulation from Salmon Arm to Osoyoos, Okanagan Life has partnered with heritage sites, theatre companies, arts galleries and best restaurants to celebrate from the north to the south of the Okanagan Valley.
“Our celebrations extend until the end of the year, and are sure to be a showcase of some of the best the Okanagan offers,“ says Byrne.
