Last December 31, Norm Letnick, MLA for Kelowna-Lake Country, and wife Helene helped ring in 2013 with the community.

Building on the successful and well attended inaugural event presented in 2012, Festivals Kelowna is once again holding the New York New Year’s family celebration on Tuesday, December 31 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Stuart Park, across from City Hall in downtown Kelowna.

“Based on the overwhelmingly positive response from the community,  we knew we had a winner on our hands with this new event,” says Renata Mills, Executive Director, Festivals Kelowna. “It’s been a little while since Kelowna has had an all-ages appropriate event to ring in the New Year, so we knew there was an opportunity to meet that need in our community.”

Free to attend, New York New Year’s family New Year’s Eve event will include skating on the outdoor ice rink and drop-in activities in the Kid’s Snow Zone. The line up include the City of Kelowna’s Park ‘n’ Play program, Karaoke and Wii stations, and Canadian-themed games like “Toss the Beaver” and “Canadian Goose Egg Drop.” New this year is a a twitter wall with with a live feed broadcast of those tweeting New Year’s wishes (#NYEKelowna).

A favourite from last year, there will also be a snow pile onsite for kids to climb upon and build a snowman. The first 2,000 people will enjoy free glow ropes and hot chocolate courtesy of the event partners: Valley First, City of Kelowna, Okanagan Strata Management, Streaming Cafe, 365 Productions, eVent! and Bell Media Kelowna.

Following the live entertainment, a fireworks display at 9:00 pm will ring in an early New Year. Shot from the North West point in City Park, the show will be visible along the waterfront from The Sails to Waterfront Park.
