Okanagan Heros: YMCA Launches Registration for Megathon

Megathon-YMCA_OkanaganRegistration for  YMCA of Okanagan 2nd annual Megathon event begins Monday, January 12. The event calls on members of the community to be a ‘hero for kids’ by signing up for their own personal fitness challenge and raising funds for local children.

"Everyone has their own unique fitness and health goals and this way each participant can choose a challenge that fits into their lifestyle."

"This event concept is new and exciting," says Pam Murkin, YMCA Fund Development Coordinator. "Everyone has their own unique fitness and health goals and this way each participant can choose a challenge that fits into their lifestyle."

Megathon will take place on February 28 at both the Kelowna Family Y and H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre with activities to choose from including an amazing race, triathlon, zumbathon, basketball tournament, 100 x 100 swim challenge and more.

Last year one YMCA member, at the age of 67, set the Megathon “Plank” record holding a perfect plank position for 10 minutes and 7 seconds. And 10 year old Chantelle, travelled from Blind Bay to participate in the 6am endurance swim challenge, completing a 10km swim in 2.15 hours, proving to herself the potential she has as an athlete and inspiring those around her.

The  event is designed for all ages and abilities offering something for everyone. Megathon is largely driven by members of the YMCA of Okanagan, but is open to the entire community. Registration fees are minimal and are waived when an individual raises a suggested amount of $150 per adult and $50 per child.

One in five Okanagan kids need financial assistance to access YMCA programs and services—as little as $250 per year can provide a child with an annual membership where he or she can develop skills, character and self-esteem.

"The more we raise, the more children we can help,” says Murkin.
