Kim Churchill, March 10th, 7:30pm, $29 including fees.
When you first encounter him, soft-spoken Kim Churchill seems like an archetypal blond, blue-eyed surfer from southern New South Wales. But behind his laidback demeanour and even tone, the 26-year-old singer-songwriter has a secret: he’s an extreme risk-taker.
Churchill spent 18 months working on the follow-up to his breakout LP, 2014’s Silence/Win, and received a stamp of approval from his record label. Album-release plans were drawn up and Churchill began to field offers from festivals and concert promoters around the world. But the new record – polished and accessible – didn’t quite feel right. At the last minute, Churchill decided to throw it out and start again.
“I worked really hard on the follow-up record for a long time,” he explains – “and it sounded good. But some very subtle layer of my consciousness was saying to me, ‘It’s not all that inspiring.’”
So Churchill picked up his guitar. He wrote a second version of the album in one frenetic week, then spent two months piecing together the new recordings with ARIA-winning producer Ian Pritchett in a garage in Western Sydney. The resulting LP, Weight Falls, is a kaleidoscopic collection that is bound to take both fans and critics by surprise.
Those familiar with Churchill’s radio smash “Window to The Sky”, which reached number 42 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 in 2014, will recognise signature elements in these new recordings: intricate guitar work, intuitive vocal melodies and a wonderful feeling of space and warmth. New single “Second Hand Car” is immediately identifiable as Churchill’s with its retro keys, propulsive guitar line and rousing chant-a-long chorus.
What sets Weight Falls apart from Churchill’s previous releases is its sense of adventure and unpredictability, characterised by chopped-up drum samples, unusual harmonies and moments of disarming lyrical honesty.
For being all instrumental, Pavlo’s Mediterranean music speaks for itself. Over the span of his 20-year career, Pavlo, the internationally renowned, award-winning recording artist, performer and songwriter, has released 10 albums of his own music, plus two collaborative projects, including 2015’s Guitarradas with Remigio Pereira of The Tenors, and 2009’s Trifecta with fellow guitar masters Rik Emmett and Oscar Lopez.
Born in Toronto to Greek parents, Pavlo has made a name for himself by offering a musical amalgam he simply calls “Mediterranean music” – a blend of Greek, flamenco, Latin, and even Balkan flavours, wrapped in contemporary pop. His music has taken him all around the world. Along the way he’s performed for royalty in the likes of Prince Charles and worked and toured with artists such as José Feliciano, Jon Secada, Olivia Newton-John and The Tenors.
It has never been more convincing, Pavlo is a TRUE WORLD artist, and has become famous for bringing every audience to their feet.
Pavlo is currently on tour promoting his second PBS special “Live in Kastoria” Greece and is still driven by his father’s famous words:

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Steve Miller Band will hit the road this summer with special guest Peter Frampton for a 32-date trek.
"Peter and I first met at Olympic studios in London in the late Sixties when we were both just starting our recording careers. He was a wonderful guitarist and songwriter then and he is even more so today. Over the years, we've played together in venues from theatres to football stadiums and everything in between," says Steve Miller.
"He always sets the musical bar high, his band always knocks me out and I'm thrilled we are going to spend the summer together doing a great run of concerts. This is the kind of quality and talent we both strive to present and I'm looking forward to a summer of great music, exceptional performances and fun. Peter is remarkable musician."
"Steve Miller was in a recording studio vocal booth stacking incredible harmonies the first time we met in London, circa 1970," says Frampton. "From that moment on, I have been a huge admirer of his multiple talents: singing, writing and of course his amazing guitar playing."
