Every parent wants their kids to be healthy and active, but only 14% of kids ages 5–11 are getting enough exercise according to ParticipACTION’s latest report on Physical Activity for Children and Youth. The recommended level of activity for children over five years old, is sixty minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per day.

Studies also show that in today’s society people of all ages are feeling less connected than ever before, in spite of technological advancements.

The YMCA of Okanagan has spaces that can bring people together and educated, caring staff who can help keep them moving.

Kids need places to go where they can surround themselves with fun and excitement. They need freedom to be kids—to run, play and laugh with friends. Kids also need positive role models; all things that can be found at the Y.

This fall, kids and their parents can choose from a multitude of activities at one of our YMCA of Okanagan locations, with a range of structured and less structured programs which provide variety based on what each child needs.

From Movie Mania and Active Kids to Get Unplugged, Let’s Dance, Science ‘n’ Swim and Karate, there is something for kids of every age and interest.

Kids can take over the facility during Friday night Teen Takeover, and families can participate in activities and events such as our Halloween Spooktacular on October 24, Candy Cane Lane on December 12, and family badminton on Tuesday nights.

These programs and events get kids active without them even realizing it. They are a great way to build a child’s skills and self-esteem which can make a big difference in their development.

YMCA programs vary depending on location, but the H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre and the Kelowna Family Y each offer a variety of options for families to choose from.

And the great thing is, that while the kids are playing, their parents can too—inside or outside the walls of the Y. With the kids taken care of, mom or dad can get in a workout, do those errands that they never have time to do, or even go on a dinner date.

The opportunities are endless at the Y. Learn more at ymcaokanagan.ca.
