Free webinars focuses on kidney health and diabetes support

The Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) is pleased to offer a webinar on Diabetes and Kidney Healthon Aug. 25 and a webinar on Diabetes Support 202 on Aug. 27, 2014.

The CDA’s webinar series provide relevant and up-to-date information for people living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes in Canada. Individuals can sign-up at no cost to attend. Thus far, participants from more than 220 communities have joined the sessions and the CDA hopes that more people will participate and take advantage of these sessions.

“The Canadian Diabetes Association is thrilled to have participants joining from across the country to learn from the comfort of their own homes,” says Sharon Hon, Coordinator, Programs, Services, and Partnerships (BC and Yukon) at the CDA. “We have many new and returning participants and it’s exciting to build supportive environments where participants are empowered and encourage each other.”

The CDA in collaboration with The Kidney Foundation will host the webinar on Diabetes and Kidney Health featuring nephrologist Dr. Tony Booth on Aug. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. (Pacific Time).

“Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease, so the Canadian Diabetes Association and The Kidney Foundation of Canada have partnered to be able to bring this information to the public,” says Heather Johnson, Director of Programs at The Kidney Foundation. “Through a webinar format, the issue of diabetes and kidney disease will be explored and explained. Together, we hope that individuals will be more aware of the risk factors for kidney disease and how best to stay healthy while dealing with diabetes and kidney issues.”

On Aug. 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. (Pacific Time), the CDA will be offering a webinar on Diabetes Support 202. Registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, Teri Currie, will share tips on better understanding the resources and options of tax credits available for people with diabetes, updates on school supports for children with type 1 diabetes, and resources available when traveling.

Participants register for the webinars through a web link and can choose to listen via telephone or through their computer speakers depending on their preference. Each session is hosted by a professional emcee who facilitates questions and a discussion as well as promotes sharing between participants using a chat feed. No special software is required and following the links is easy and quick even for a novice computer user.

Upcoming webinars include Crossing the Great Divide: Navigating the health-care system as a young adult with diabetes with pediatric nurse clinician and certified diabetes educator, June Jacob.
