At 6:00 p.m. we put the September issue of Okanagan Life to bed. Two hours later we were shouting “Stop the presses!’”

Gusting winds had suddenly whipped the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire into a frenzy. Flames leaped hundreds of feet into the night sky, advancing on Kelowna like a legion of demons released from hell. Within hours the firestorm would change the face of our city—and show us what community really means.
